The origin of this statement has been lost somewhat in political acceptance of a meaning which says that a lateral thinker is somehow a better thinker than a logical thinker.
   As far as I can tell the term derives from the revisiting of a logical progression already advanced. Cutting a seperate pathway at some point in the original thought and following a new line of enquiry.
   If it were put on a blackboard . the original thought shows a vertical progression from start to finish. The lateral thinking joins the logical thought in a side branch and continues it's new path.
   The only lateral thinking is a new direction of an existing logical thought.
   Lateral thinkers are not originators of thought , but enhancers of what is expected to be the outcome.
